Picking The Right Song
It can be enjoyable to plan the music for your event celebration. Deciding what special songs to play for each special moment to make it memorable. It can also be a daunting task to put it all together. Your taste may change from one week to the next as to what the first dance should be or the entrance music. Your DJ can help guide you through the magnitude of music possibilities. Here are some DJ tips to get you started.
- Make an initial list, and start with what you know, do not worry if you do not have every special moment or dance decided at this moment, just begin a rough draft of ideas. Over the course of days weeks or even months, you will have changes in your moods as you hear songs on the radio, streaming service, or background music in a store. You may hear an old song that clicks with you or a new song might come out you fall in love with. The theme of your wedding celebration may change. There are many possibilities that can present themselves that help you make the final list.
- Consider your guests and event theme, and try to be cohesive. You don’t have to stick with just one genre of music, but you do not want to be all over the place either. If you are having the reception in a barn you may consider some extra country songs to fit in with the look. Likewise, if the reception is in a historic mansion you may consider playing more oldies.
- Think about songs you really want to hear. Give them a test drive to see if they are good to dance to. If they are not, it doesn’t mean you shouldn’t play them just think about when. Perhaps during cocktails or during dinner would be a better fit.
- Trust your DJ, assuming you did a little research and hired one that is reputable and not your brother’s buddy with an iPhone, playing shuffled music off Itunes (maybe he will be great, may the odds be forever in your favor). DJs specialize in creating mixes that fit the event. A seasoned DJ will have files of music for every dance and special moment, and set lists to work from. A great DJ can read a crowd, build anticipation, build flow, and release energy on the dance floor.
- It’s OK to take requests from family and friends but don’t be afraid to ignore them either. It can be a gamble to offer up, “If you request it I will dance to it”. On the other hand, a specially requested song from your grandparents to dance to bring back fond memories for them might make a fond memory for you.
- Don’t be afraid to break the rules, after all, it’s your party and your memories. No one will care about the music as much as you will. As you reflect over the years, you will remember those wonderful moments, but at most only a few others will so make them special for you.
Hope these tips are helpful.
